☆ A Long-Forgotten TV Script by Rachel Carson Is Now a Picture Book

SOMETHING ABOUT THE SKY, by Rachel Carson. At the dawn of the 19th century, the chemist and amateur meteorologist Luke Howard, still in his 20s, noticed that clouds form in particular shapes under particular conditions. Applying the principles of the newly popular Linnaean taxonomy of the living world to clouds, he named the three main classes cumulus, stratus and cirrus, then braided them into sub-taxonomies. When a German translation reached Goethe, the polymathic poet with a passion for morphology was so inspired that he sent fan mail to the young man who “distinguished cloud from cloud,” then composed a suite of verses about the main classes. It was Goethe’s poetry, translating the lexicon of an obscure science into the language of wonder, that popularized the cloud names we use today.

CNN —Public campaign finance disclosures from Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s campaign reveal numerous payments to individuals and groups whose ideologies differ significantly from traditional Democratic Party politics, a review by CNN’s KFile finds. Kennedy’s campaign paid a litany of prominent activists – which includes some anti-vaccine advocates, public health conspiracy theorists and Republicans, either individually or through their businesses – the filings show. One anti-vax activist, whose company was paid by Kennedy, once famously compared vaccine mandates to prosecution of Jews during the Holocaust. Bigtree, a film producer who also founded the anti-vaccination group Informed Consent Action Network, regularly speaks against vaccination and public health measures. The Kennedy campaign did not respond to CNN’s comment requests.

I really began to sell once I had a piece in a group show at Canada Gallery in 2014. That sold, my Rachel Carson piece [ “Rachel Carson and Eagles” (2013)]. You would see the busts of important men all the time, and I decided that [the ecologist] Rachel Carson needed to have one, too. If it’s a figure, I start with a base and work my way up, then I add to it as I go along. Part of the evolution of it is not me but the piece itself adjusting to what it wants to be.

The US didn't always have the clean air many of us are used to. This week I didn't expect my texts to be about air quality. New Yorkers and others are getting a taste of what it can be like to live in Doha, Qatar, and Shanghai, where at least air pollution appears to be improving. When the first Earth Day took place in April 1970, air pollution was a major problem in most US cities. Those actions have since made such a difference that many of us are now shocked by what poor air quality looks like.

While writing this, I read and revisited authors as different as Jean Rhys, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Dawn Powell, Theodor Adorno and Gertrude Stein. Wodehouse section of my library and can report that I’ve read 29 of his books.

California's monarch butterflies made a miraculous rebound from nearly disappearing in 2020. I visited Pacific Grove, AKA "Butterfly Town, USA," to see the monarch migration for the first time. CNN interviewed him in June about the book, his trip to space with the Jeff Bezos-backed space tourism company Blue Origin, and what’s next for the 91-year-old. William Shatner: Fifty-five or 60 years ago I read a book called “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson. Shatner: The whole idea here is to get people accustomed to going to space, as if it’s like going to the Riviera. The song “So Fragile, So Blue,” is very much about my experience in space. And then I have my book, called “Boldly Go,” coming out in the fall.
